Wendall Sherman Messenger

August 15, 1935 — May 20, 2025

Wendall Sherman Messenger, 89, of Oklahoma City, OK and formerly of Olney, IL passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in Oklahoma. Wendall was born on August 15, 1935, in Sumner, IL to parents Herschel and Ethel (Petty) Messenger. He married Alice (Vogel) Messenger on October 17, 1954, in Lawrenceville, IL. Alice preceded him in death on December 13, 2020.


Wendall graduated from Sumner High School, Sumner, IL, where he played basketball and baseball. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Olney, IL. Wendall worked at Eastern Illinois Gas Company in Olney, IL as a repairman for 26 years. He then retired from the State of Illinois Department of Transportation after 17 years of service. Wendall achieved the 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite. He also served as Republican Precinct committeeman and served as Chairman for the Olney Park Board. Wendall will be greatly missed by his family.


Wendall is survived by his daughters, Cindy Hill and husband Frank of Oklahoma City, OK and Twila Hornback and husband Rick of Brownsburg, IN. Grandchildren Craig Hill and wife Jaclyn of Keller, TX, Chris Hill and wife Aubrey of Katy, TX, Tyler Hornback and wife Emily of Lizton, IN and Shelby (Hornback) Hull and husband Bailey of Dallas, TX. Great grandchildren, Chance, Nolan and Benson Hill, Mallory, James and Luke Hill; and Mac Hornback.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice and infant son, Kendall Lee Messenger, his parents and siblings Lucille Fiscus, Edith Wells and Kenneth Messenger.


Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney, IL has been entrusted with arrangements.


Cremation Rites were accorded with a graveside service to be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Sumner Cemetery, Sumner, IL.


Memorials can be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church, Olney, IL.
