Stanley was born on December 19, 1924 in Lawrence County, IL, the son of William T. & Ruby (Scherer) Walters. He married Vera Mae Fritschle Stanley was a Sentry Insurance salesman for 20 years in Southeastern Illinois and spent 24 years as the Olney Township Tax Assessor. He was a lifelong member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lawrenceville, IL. He was a gifted Sunday school teacher and served in many positions in the church. He graduated from Bridgeport Township High School in 1942. Stan joined the Army Air Corp during WWII and was a P-38 fighter pilot. He flew 43 combat missions over Southern Europe until he crashed landed in the Alps of Austria. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war until being liberated by U.S. Army Forces in the spring of 1945. After the war he continued his Air Force Reserve career and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Stanley was a life long member of the P-38 National Association, American Legion, and Reserve Officer Association. He was a member of the American Legion in Olney. Stanley leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Vera Mae; His four children, Janet Wyatt & husband Mel, Earlington, KY; Nancy McCarty & husband Geoff Seger, Bradenton, FL; Mark Walters & wife Sheri, Naperville, IL; Dan Walters & wife Amy, Rochester, IL; Stanley was a loving grandfather to 8 grandchildren, John Michael Wyatt, Jill Wyatt Dilday & husband David, Layla McCarty, Matthew and Elyse Walters, Emily Bergschneider, Lauren and Seth Walters and 1 great grandson Donavan Dilday. His sisters, Jeanne Walters of Bridgeport, IL and Marjorie Stockfleet of Lawrenceville, IL and sister-in-law Helen Walters of Colorado. Stanley was greatly respected and loved by many in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Russell Walters
