Fred Phillip Hammes, age 82, of Corning, NY, passed away on July 27, 2024. He was born in Utica, NY on June 14, 1942 to Frederick and Eunice Hammes. Fred was a shining example of a life well-lived. He devoted the majority of his 82 years to the service of others, both in his personal life and professional career.
Fred's journey of life was nothing short of remarkable. Following high school, he courageously answered the call to serve his nation in the United States Navy and the US Marine Corps. His valor and bravery during the Vietnam War earned him a Purple Heart, a testament to his indomitable spirit. After his military service, Fred pursued a career in healthcare, becoming a registered nurse. This profession allowed him to showcase his dependable nature and loyalty.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Nan; daughter, Michelle (Josh) Harrison; step-daughter, Jennifer (Brian) Kelley; step-sons, Samuel Patterson, Stephen (Kate) Patterson, and Paul Patterson; grandchildren, Brendon O’Shields, Brittany O’Shields, Sam Harrison, and Ashley Hammes; step-grandchildren: Josh, Leah, and Caleb Kelley, Quinn and Graham Patterson, and Lauryn, Evan, Nolan, and Lumen Patterson; sister, Mary (Harold) Weyand; and brother, Edward Hammes. Preceding him in death were his parents, Frederick and Eunice Hammes; son, Fred M. Hammes; and sister-in-law, Terry Hammes.
Friends will be received on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 3-4 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. 1st Street in Corning, where a Memorial Service with full Military Honors will follow at 4:00 PM, with Pastor Paul Mather officiating.
