Floyd W. Meentemeyer, 84, of Olney, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024 in Evansville, Indiana.
Floyd was born March 12, 1940 in Nashville, Illinois, the son of Howard and Norma (Nehrt) Meentemeyer. He married Nancy Ruth Taylor on July 29, 1962 in Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carmi, Illinois, and she survives.
Floyd graduated from Crossville High School in 1958. He attended DeVry Tech School in Chicago, majoring in Electronics. He started his career as a lineman for GTE and finished his career as a phone technician for Verizon in 2005. Floyd was confirmed at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carmi on May 29, 1953 and later became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Olney, where he served on the council, taught Sunday School, was a sponsor for the Sr. and post High School leagues, coached the church basketball team, and played on the softball team. Floyd enjoyed woodworking and working on his computer. He loved doing things with family and friends. He took pleasure in helping people, watching TV, having morning coffee with retired co-workers, and making pinewood derby race cars with grandsons. Floyd was an Eagle Scout and was also an honorary Girl Scout, due to his volunteering with the Girl Scouts while his daughters were members.
Floyd is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Meentemeyer of Olney; daughter, Michelle Meentemeyer of Olney; daughter, Kendra Hayes of Shelbyville, KY; grandsons, Devin (Ashley) Hayes, Nathan (fiancée Kristyn) Hayes, and granddaughter, Taylor (Nicky) Brandenberg, all of Shelbyville; great grandson, Paul and Lucas Hayes of Shelbyville; sister, Janice Elwood of Evansville, IN; brother-in-law, Everett Taylor of Granville, IL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by parents; baby brother, Kermit; brother-in-law, LeRoy Elwood; sister-in-law, Janelle Taylor; mother and father-in-law, Homer and Evelyn (Porter) Taylor; grandparents, Walter and Marie Meentemeyer and Charles and Emma Nehrt.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney, with a visitation beginning one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
Interment will follow the service at Crest Haven Memorial Park in Claremont, Illinois.
