Donald Roy "Duck" Herdes

Donald Roy "Duck" Herdes, 65, of Noble, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Clay County Hospital in Flora, Illinois.


Donald was born June 2, 1959 in Flora, Illinois, the son of CJ Herdes and Eva Grace (Wyatt) Herdes. He was united in marriage to Trudi L. Weber on July 1, 1978, in Wendelin, and together they have shared 46 years of marriage.


Many people knew Don as "Duck". He owned and operated his own oilfield company, Herdes, Inc., for over 45 years. He also owned Ducks Sporting Goods and shot professionally for Browning archery.


Don raised and owned horses for 20 years and also team penned. He stood two American Paint Horse Association (APHA) registered stallions.


Donald also enjoyed trapshooting and was a life member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association. In 2012 he won the Grand American Handicap Championship in a field of over 2000 competitors in Sparta, IL. For several years he was in the top 20 of singles averages in the State of IL. More recently he has been mentoring young trapshooters at the County Line Rod and Gun Club.


Donald was an avid hunter and enjoyed whitetail deer and coyote hunting. He also took pleasure in riding around in his side-by-side with his wife and watching his hunting dogs.


Of all the accomplishments in his life, Donald was most proud of his family.


Don is survived by wife, Trudi Herdes of Noble; daughter, Valerie (Jeff) Bunting of Albion; son, Calvin (Jessica) Herdes of Noble; daughter, Alison (Jesse) Harvey of Louisville, IL; grandchildren, Cali and Cate Bunting of Albion; Wyatt, Waylon, and Clara Harvey of Louisville, IL; Sawyer Herdes of Noble; siblings, Donna (Larry) Oaster of Maryville, IL; Dena Fulk of Noble; Dennis (Diane) Herdes of Noble; Darla Means of Newton; father and mother-in-law, Ralph and Georgianna Weber of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, JR Means and Roy Fulk.


Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney has been entrusted with arrangements.


A visitation will be held for family and friends on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home, Olney. Another time for Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM prior to the funeral service on Thursday morning.


The funeral service will be held for Don at 10:00 AM on Thursday, Jan 2nd, 2025 at Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home, Olney, with Father Charles Anyaoku officiating.


Interment will follow the service at Holy Cross Cemetery in Wendelin.


Memorials can be made to Richland Co. Blaze Orange Youth Trapshooters or Full Armor Louisville Youth Trapshooters.
